American business magnate, investor, author, philanthropist, and humanitarian.
William Henry Gates III is a corporate entrepreneur, businessman, author, philanthropist, and humanitarian from the United States. He is well recognized as the creator of the Microsoft Corporation. During his tenure at Microsoft, Gates served as chairman, CEO, and chief software architect, as well as being the company’s biggest individual shareholder until May 2014.
Gates was born and reared in Seattle, Washington, and founded Microsoft with boyhood friend Paul Allen in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1975, eventually becoming the world’s biggest personal computer software firm. Gates headed the firm as chairman and CEO until January 2000, when he stepped down as CEO, while he remained chairman and became chief software architect. Gates stated in June 2006 that he would be shifting to a part-time job at Microsoft and full-time work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Organization, the private philanthropic foundation founded by him and his wife, Melinda Gates, in 2000. He eventually delegated his responsibilities to Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie. In February 2014, he stood down as chairman of Microsoft and took on a new role as technical advisor to help newly appointed CEO Satya Nadella.
Gates is a well-known entrepreneur from the personal computer revolution. He has been chastised for his business practices, which have been deemed anti-competitive. Numerous court judgements have supported this viewpoint.
Since 1987, Gates has been on the Forbes list of the world’s richest people, which is an index of the wealthiest recorded persons, omitting and rating those whose wealth cannot be fully determined.
Gates has explored a variety of charity activities after leaving Microsoft later in his career. He made significant contributions to many philanthropic organizations and scientific research initiatives via the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which is said to be the world’s biggest private charity. Gates and Warren Buffett established The Giving Pledge in 2009, in which they and other billionaires pledged to donate at least half of their fortune to charity. The organization seeks to save lives and promote global health, and it is currently collaborating with Rotary International to eradicate polio.
