Mark Elliot Zuckerberg is an American technology entrepreneur and philanthropist. Zuckerberg is well-known for co-founding and heading Facebook as its chairman and CEO. He also co-founded and is on the board of Breakthrough Starshot, a solar sail spacecraft development initiative.
Zuckerberg was born in White Plains, New York, and attended Harvard University, where he founded Facebook on February 4, 2004, from his dorm room with college classmates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. Initially founded on a few college campuses, the site quickly grew and subsequently moved beyond universities, reaching one billion members by 2012. In May 2012, Zuckerberg took the firm public with a controlling stake. His net worth is projected to be $55.0 billion as of November 30, 2018, with Facebook shares as a whole decreasing over the prior year. He became the world’s youngest self-made millionaire in 2007, at the age of 23. As of 2018, he is the only person under 50 in the Forbes ten richest people list, and the only one under 40 in the Top 20 Billionaires list.
Since 2010, Time magazine has named Zuckerberg one of the world’s 100 richest and most powerful persons as part of its Person of the Year award. Zuckerberg was placed 10th on Forbes’ list of the World’s Most Powerful People in December 2016.
