Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.

The Wikimedia Foundation fosters the development and spread of free educational material via projects such as Wikipedia.

Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. (WMF, or simply Wikimedia) is a charity foundation registered under US law that is based in San Francisco, California. It owns the Wikimedia projects, which are created and maintained by thousands of unpaid volunteers, as well as the MediaWiki wiki software.

Jimmy Wales founded the Wikimedia Foundation in 2003 in St. Petersburg, Florida as a non-profit organization to support Wikipedia, Wiktionary, and other crowdsourced wiki projects that had previously been hosted by Bomis, Wales’ for-profit corporation. The Foundation is primarily funded by millions of modest gifts from Wikipedia users, which are gathered through email campaigns and yearly fundraising banners displayed on Wikipedia. Grants from numerous technology businesses and charity groups supplement this.

Throughout its history, the Foundation has expanded fast. By 2021, it had approximately 550 employees and contractors, yearly sales in excess of US$160 million, annual costs in the neighborhood of US$110 million, and a rising endowment that topped US$100 million in June 2021.
